Circus Summer Afternoon Tea in Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

A few months ago, I had lunch at the Goldfinch Brasserie of the Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam. That was already a foodie bucket list item that I could cross off. But when we went to the Peacock Alley for a cup of tea afterwards and we saw the Afternoon Tea being served, we immediately had a new item on our list. Trust me; the Afternoon Tea at the Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam belongs on your food bucket list!

The Summer Afternoon Tea comes in a different theme each year. And this summer it has the really amazing theme Circus! It takes you back in time to boardwalk entertainment and circus acts. Pastry chef Vipin Charley and executive sous chef Thomas Bron have created a carrousel with wonderful small dishes that will make you instantly happy just by looking at it!

But before you get to the ‘piece de resistance’ you start with a refreshing alcohol-free cocktail with cranberries. It is summer after all and you might want to start with something to cool you off after a warm day in the city.
During the Afternoon Tea you get unlimited tea. They choose a China Supreme Rose Tea that matches perfectly with all the savory and sweet bites.

The amuse was a small nori cone filled with tomato cream cheese, avocado, puffed rice and soy. With the regular Summer Afternoon Tea you’ll get a mini chickenburger with Thai basil and cucumber relish, but we had a vegetarian afternoon tea so we got a veggie club sandwich with avocado and tomato.

And then it’s time for the main attraction. The carrousel filled with colorful and fabulous dishes. There are savory dishes on one side and sweet bites on the other.
With the regular afternoon tea you’ll get a mini hotdog with red unions, crispy sauerkraut and hotdog. We had an avocado tartelette for our vegetarian version.
There are savory Mary-go-round horses made from gingerbread stuffed with tomato cream cheese (in our vegetarian version) and rolled sandwiches with green asparagus and cream cheese.

Now an Afternoon Tea isn’t complete without sweets of course. And boy, the sweets at the Waldorf Astoria are amazing. Look at these toffee apples and lavender and apricot choux with cotton candy for example. Don’t you just love the colored sprinkles as well? Such a colorful touch!

They also had a popcorn cupcake and a passionfruit doughnut. Unicorns with blackberry and lime and probably my favorite: clown shaped macarons with strawberry and vanilla flavors.

And as if that wasn’t enough we also got chocolate and vanilla scones with clotted cream and 3 types of marmalade. And a glass of champagne to top it all off.

The Summer Afternoon Tea is such a wonderful experience. Whether you got something to celebrate, had a financial windfall or if you just want to treat a special friend (or yourself): do yourself a favor and book this Summer Afternoon tea at the Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam.

You’re welcome to enjoy the Summer Afternoon Tea daily from 3 to 5pm. From Friday to Sunday there’s live piano music. Reserve your afternoon tea by calling +31 20 718 4643 or email to restaurants.amsterdam@waldorfastoria.com.
