Tikal in Guatemala
If you’re ever in Guatemala you should definitely go to Tikal. But also if you’re in Mexico or Belize it’s worth taking a day to explore the Maya ruins of Tikal. Tikal is a 1 hour drive from Flores, and many organizations offer day tours.
Tikal are the ruins of what used to be a large city in Mayan times. After the city was abandoned the jungle took over. It must have been a great discovery when the first person started researching the area. Nowadays many temples and other ruins are visible, but 80% is still buried underneath the ground.
I advice you to go with a tour or to hire a guide as they’ll be able to tell you all you about the history of the sight and the daily life of the Mayans.
We went on a tour from Belize with Pacz Tours. Included with the tour was transportation, border crossing fees, entrance fees and a guide. And lunch on the way back was also included! Tikal is a 2,5 hour drive from San Igancio in Belize, although you’ll need a bit longer to fill out all the paperwork at the border.
