Healthy hotspots in Maastricht

On this page I’m sharing my favorite hotspots in Maastricht. Maastricht is the most southern city of the Netherlands and very close to the Belgian border. The inhabitants are known for their love for good food, wine and extensive dinners. There are many restaurants in this city at the Maas river, but many of them have a little original menu. The French cuisine has been popular here for years. Luckily there are also a couple of great places who serve more original, sustainable and vegetarian dishes. I’ve listed my favorite places for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Maastricht for you, as well as my favorite hotels in or nearby Maastricht. All restaurants listed below have good vegetarian and/or vegan options.

De Brandweerkantine

The Brandweerkantine means the canteen of the fire fighters and is actually housed in an old fire station. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I love to go here for breakfast. They have buckwheat bread with several toppings, bagels, pita’s and several sweet treats like pain au chocolat and scones.
They have quite a few vegetarian options like the buckwheat mushroom burger pictured above. Read more about De Brandweerkantine on this page.

Ceramique

Ceramique is a sustainable restaurant that has been housed in a monumental building close to the Maas for over 20 years. Although they’ve been around for a long time they might be the least old fashioned restaurant in Maastricht. Besides meat and fish they serve many vegetarian and vegan dishes. On the menu the vegetarian and vegan dishes are clearly marked. They have a great vegan chickpea mango soup as a starter and a delicious pumpkin risotto for dinner (pictured above). Read my full review on Ceramique on this page.

Preps

On the location where vegan friendly lunchroom and bakery Kafethea used to be, Preps opened up in 2019. Preps will be open for breakfast and lunch and they’ll have many vegetarian and vegan options.
I had these vegan pancakes when the space was still called Kafethea, I hope Preps will have something similar on the menu as it was delicious!

Chateau Neercanne

Looking for a special night out? Reserve your table at Chateau Neercanne. This restaurant is located in a beautiful castle just outside Maastricht. Dinner at Chateau Neercanne means a full night-out with delicious dishes and matching wines. It’s the perfect restaurant for if you’ve got something to celebrate or a romantic dinner with your loved one.

Hotel: Kruisherenhotel

The Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht is a luxurious 5 star hotel in the city center. The hotel is a heaven for interior design and art lovers as it’s located in a former monastery. If you’re looking for a special hotel in Maastricht or if you want to surprise your loved one with a luxurious stay; I suggest you book a room in the Kruisherenhotel!

Hotel: Vaeshartelt

The Vaeshartelthotel is located at the edge of Maastricht and is also a very unique hotel to spend the night. Hotel Vaeshartelt is located in a wonderful green estate. The castle was build in the middle ages and has a beautiful old exterior. The hotel rooms however were renovated in 2014 so they’re very modern. A great combination if you ask me! Vaeshartelt also has a restaurant where you can have lunch or dinner and in the morning they serve a delicious breakfast. One of my favorite features was their gym&tonic, you can get the key to this well designed gym at the reception. Find out more about Vaeshartelt on this page.
