Are you planning to visit Malta in december? I absolutely recommend it! The island South of Italy has a very pleasant climate, with temperatures between 15-20 degrees Celsius in December. As Malta has a rich Catholic herritage, you can enjoy great Christmas activities the whole month. But you can also, of course, just enjoy the top sights of Malta when the weather isn’t too hot. On this page I’m telling you all you need to know about visiting Malta in December.
Temperature on Malta in December
As I said, the temperature on Malta is still very pleasant in December. The average temperature during the day is between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. Sometimes you have even warmer, sunny days.
At night tenperatures only drop a few degrees, to around 12-15 degrees Celsius.
Christmas on Malta
There are several ways to get into the Christmas spirit on Malta, with all kinds of activities.
Every year fron the beginning of December to the beginning of January, you can visit Fairyland, Santa’s City. This Maltese take on a Christmasmarket has a Ferris wheel, Christmas decorations, mulled wine and food stands where you can buy traditional honey rings (qagĥaq tal-gĥasel). You can find Fairyland, Santa’s City at Pjazza Tritoni in Valletta.
The capital city Valletta has several other great sights for when you’re visiting Malta in December. St. George’s Square has pretty projections on its buildings after dark. And the Valletta skyline is beautifully illuminated by night. Two must-sees are the Christmas lights at Republic street and the The Triton fountain by night.
Valletta Waterfront
From the end of November until the beginning of January you can enjoy all kinds of festive displays and activities at the Valletta Waterfront. There’s a towering 35-foot tree, Santa’s house, and larger-than-life characters like a 20-foot Nutcracker Soldier and a jumbo gingerbread man, all set against the historic buildings dating back to 1752. The area is nicely illuminated and there are plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy a nice dinner.
The Magical Illuminated Trail
The Magical Illuminated Trail is wonderful to visit if you’re on Malta in December. Every year from the end of November to the beginning of January you can visit it at the Verdala Palace in Buskett. The historic Verdala gardens are transformed after dark with illuminated sculptures, light installations and whimsical displays. The The Magical Illuminated Trail is also great if you’re visiting Malta with kids.
Concerts in December
In December there are several extra concerts and special performances in Malta, most of them in Valletta. From balets to opera and musicals. Check out the calendars of Teatru Manoel and MCC in Valletta for the current agenda.
