This year there’s a new food trend: the Winter Barbecue. More and more people are organizing a barbecue in the winter. I’ve often been traveling abroad in the winter, and on the Southern hemisphere it’s very common to barbecue in December or January. I had a barbecue in South Africa in december for example. But of course; these months are their summer months. But now I’ve noticed that it’s also becoming very popular to barbecue in the winter in Europe.
My first winter barbecue was when an Australian friend in Amsterdam invited me for a Christmas Barbecue. A tradition in his homecountry and he didn’t see any reason to not throw a barbecue party in Amsterdam for Christmas as well. I first thought it was quite strange but it turned out to be a great evening. Gathering around the barbecue in the backyard felt like standing around a bonfire. And even though you could also just get your food from the bbq and get back in the house to eat it, I found myself outside most of the evening.
More and more Europeans are taking up on winter barbecues too. Especially since people often invest in a good barbecue nowadays and it would be a waste to only use it in the summer.

Roasted Sweet Potato
Roasting sweet potatoes on the barbecue is a great thing to do in winter. Simply pierce some holes in the (sweet) potatoes and wrap them in aluminium foil. Leave them on the barbecue for about 30 minutes. Remove from the aluminium foil and make a cut halfway through. You can fill it with stuffing of your choice. You can for example use hummus, avocado, roasted pine nuts, fresh parsley and basil, like pictured above.
Winter Pizza
Did you know that on some barbecues you can also make pizzas? The ceramic The Bastard for example is perfect for baking pizzas. I topped this pizza base with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spinach, red onion, cherry tomatoes and black olives. Bake for 8-10 minutes on your barbecue.
Dessert from the Barbecue
Did you ever make a dessert on the barbecue? It can be much tastier than just roasting marshmallows. My favorite in the winter time is to roast stone-fruit like peaches, plums or nectarines. Serve them with some maple syrup, crushed pecans and vanilla ice cream for a perfect dessert of your winter barbecue.
