Frank’s Smoke House opened up in Amsterdam in 2017. A friend of mine lives around the corner and is a big fan of this restaurant. As Frank specializes in smoked fish and meat, I didn’t think it would be something for me as a vegetarian. But when I heard they also have good vegetarian options I got curious and I went anyway.
Frank’s Smoke House is divided in two areas. The front part is a deli, in this shop you can buy all kinds of products that Frank and his son Thomas have prepared. The back is the restaurant where you can enjoy a lunch or dinner.
Everything that they smoke at
Frank’s Smoke House is organic, line caught and 100% free of antibiotics, hormones and other growth promotants. Frank creates all the recipes himself. By smoking the meat and fish you can preserve it longer, making it more sustainable. Frank’s Smoke House is famous with vegetarians and vegans in Amsterdam because of the smoked tofu he sells at his deli. So I’m not the only vegetarian who set foot in Frank’s restaurant!
There are several vegetarian items on the menu of Frank’s Smoke House. As starters they have fried cheese rolls served with smoked ketchup and the organic burrata salad with smoked red beets and rocket pictured above. You can also go for the smoked cheese platter with 3 types of smoked cheeses with matching garnishes.
For the main dish my friend went for one of his favorites: the fish and chips. I had the vegetarian risotto with mushrooms. It might not be very photogenic but it tasted delicious and that’s the most important thing!
They also have four sweet desserts and smoked cheese for after your dinner at Frank’s Smoke House. I went for the cherry clafoutis with coconut ice cream pictured at the top of this page. Clafoutis is a French baked cake with fruit, it’s served lukewarm. They also have a Lava Cake, New York Cheesecake and Cardamon parfait. My friend went for the crepes that were on the day menu.
