Restaurant Lt Cornelis in Amsterdam

Good restaurants in the city center of Amsterdam are hard to find, so I’m very happy I found this gem! Lt. Cornelis is housed in a beautiful building in a small street right in the city center. Close to the floating flower market, Dam Square and main shopping street the Kalverstraat.

If you walk into the Voetboogstraat, a small alley parallel to the Kalverstraat, you won’t expect a beautiful restaurant. But just walk op the stairs and be surprised!

Lt. Cornelis brings the Dutch kitchen to a higher level. I have to admit that I normally don’t get very enthusiastic when someone suggests a Dutch meal, but at Lt. Cornelis de flavors are very rich and the dishes very unique! You can order a-la-carte or you can go for a 3, 4 or 5 course surprise menu.

Me and my friend both went for the surprise menu, which can be made vegetarian if desired. One of the dishes was this beauty with lentils, Hollandaise sauce, yellow and purple carrot and a cream of Jerusalem artichoke. As a main dish we had risotto of pearl barley with vegetables and nuts.

The dessert was this Frangipani (an almond cake) with pear prepared in multiple ways, boerenjongens (raisins soaked in brandy), hangop (leaked yogurt) and ice cream made from advocaat (a traditional Dutch alcoholic beverage made from eggs and brandy). All the Dutch dessert favorites in a very un-classical dessert!

I love how they got creative in the kitchen of Lt. Cornelis and used traditional Dutch ingredients or dishes to create a whole new experience. The Dutch twist to the menu also makes it very nice to go Lt. Cornelis with business partners or friends from abroad who are visiting Amsterdam.
