Brasserie VOC Udenhout

If you live in a city you probably recognize this: you never go to a restaurant in one of the neighboring villages! I’m totally guilty of this. When I lived in Amsterdam I never went to any of the small towns in the area (accept Hoofddorp, because I used to work there) and now that I moved to Tilburg I hadn’t been to any of the towns close to it yet.
After 1,5 years in Tilburg I finally took the time to explore a restaurant outside of the city center. I went to Brasserie de VOC in Udenhout. Udenhout is a small town to the North-East of Tilburg. It’s right next to the ‘Loonse en Drunense duinen’, the big national park with sand dunes. It’s an absolutely beautiful area to spend a day at, and in the evening you can have dinner at Brasserie de VOC.

brasserie voc udenhoutBrasserie de VOC is named after the Verenigde Oostindische compagnie, the 17th century trading company Dutch East India company. You’ll see this theme throughout the restaurant and even on the menu. The restaurant is decorated with nautical objects and on the menu you’ll find the herbs and spices that were brought to the Netherlands by the VOC.
There’s a reason why the restaurant has this theme: owners Dennis and Patty met each other when they both worked in the navy. They even got married on a ship!

Brasserie de VOC opened in 2017 and is already a popular restaurant in Udenhout. Time for the people from the area to discover it too! Me and my boyfriend went there and had a delicious dinner. Besides bread with 3 different spreads we also both had a starter.

pulled pork voc udenhoutMy boyfriend went for the pulled pork in steamed buns served with red onions, cucumber and sesame mayonaise. And I went for the sourdough toast with salsify (‘schorseneren’) and poached egg that you can see on the top of this page.

I went for the portobello mushroom stuffed with courgette, bell pepper and olives. It was topped with Parmesan cheese and served with a side salad.

As you might understand after seeing all these pictures, is that we didn’t have room for dessert anymore. Too bad because we always love a thousand layer cake (spekkoek) and heard great stories about their homemade apple pie. I guess we’ll have to come back soon!
