The best ice cream in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is often referred to as the ice cream capital of the world. In 2015 SoolNua created the World Ice Cream Index. They collected over 25 000 votes to find the best ice cream in the world. And Lolita in Ljubljana won.
When I visited Lolita I expected a counter with many different ice cream flavors, but Lolita is more a confectionary than an ice cream shop. You can buy cakes or order a dessert, but they have very few ice cream flavors.

I made it my mission to find the best ice cream in this ice cream capital. There are many restaurants with a little ice cream counter outside, but there are 3 restaurants that were not only my absolute favorite, but also the best places to go to according to the locals that I know in Ljubljana.

gelateria tomantika Ljubljana
One of them is Gelateria Romantika. If you have a Lonely Planet of Slovenia you probably heard of them because the writers call this the best ice cream in the world. The ice cream is all made on the spot and they use as many local ingredients as possible. They don’t use any pre-prepared natural fruit bases, preservatives, food colourings, aromas or other additives. Besides ice cream, they also have Belgian Waffles and a gluten free cone is available. Now although the taste was pretty good and I loved their philosophy, I wouldn’t go as far as calling it the best ice cream in the world.

cacao ljubljana
Cacao
also makes the ice cream they sell at their own location. Besides Ljubljana they also have a shop in Portoroz (at the Slovenian coast) and in Prague. Cacao has many flavours, and amongst them several vegan, sugar free and gluten free options. I had a delicious scoop of vegan dark chocolate ice cream. Cacao has a lot more flavors to choose from than Gelateria Romantika, and their ice cream is more creamy.

vigo icecream ljubljana
Vigo
was recommended to me by a friend who lives in Ljubljana. Just like Cacao, Vigo also has many flavours to choose from. And at Vigo the chocolate sauce comes out of a tap! Their beautifully styled menu has pictures artistically showing the ingredients of the current flavors. They have original and tasty combinations like mascarpone with nutella, cream cheese with strawberries or dark chocolate with caramel. And did I already mention that the chocolate tap is always open?

With these three great options to choose from, I’d definitely recommend Ljubljana as a destination for ice cream lovers!
