Savory Popovers with cheese and olives

Remember the raspberry popovers that I made? This time I made a savory version with cheese and olives! These savory popovers make a great snack or side dish for your brunch table. On this page I’m sharing the recipe for savory popovers with cheese and olives.

Popovers aren’t very known in the Netherlands yet, but they’re very popular in the United States. These snacks that literally pop over their tin, are airy like croissants. And just like croissants you can eat them sweet and savory. Because they rise so high in the oven you get a very airy snack with a crunchy outside. You can make all kinds of savory popovers, but I made mines with grated cheese and black olives.

To make popovers you need a special popover tin. If you live in the Netherlands you can order your popover tin at Surprise Kookgerei.
I’ve got a special discount code for readers of this blog; if you use code ‘anne-travel’ you get a 2.50€ discount on your order and free shipping (worth 6€). They ship to the Netherlands and Belgium. Click here to order your popover pan.

Recipe popovers with cheese and olives

Ingredients (for 6 popovers):
500 ml milk
250 grams flour
4 eggs
100 grams grated cheese
2 tablespoons pitted black olives, halved
Optionally: black pepper

Preheat the oven to 190C/375F.
In a saucepan, warm the milk until warm, but not boiling.
Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl. Add the warm milk while whisking.
Add the flour and mix well.
Add 2/3 of the grated cheese and optionally some pepper.
Put the popover tin in the oven for 2 minutes. Grease with cooking spray or olive oil.
Divide the mixture over the 6 tins. Divide the olive halves over the 6 tins.
Sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
Put the popovers in the oven for 40 minutes. Try not to open the oven in between, so that the rise best.
