Kaunas is the second biggest city of Lithuania. It’s about a 1,5 hour drive from Vilnius. It’s a pretty city with a big pedestrian area and some great things to see. On this page I’m sharing the top sights in Kaunas.
Liberty Boulevard
There’s one very long pedestrian street in Kaunas. It’s called Laisves Aleja, or Liberty Boulevard. It stretches all the way from the West to the East of the city. There are all kinds of restaurants and bars located on the street.
We stayed at Hotel Kaunas which was also located on this street. It was a perfect starting point to discover Kaunas, as you’re right at the main street.
Jesuit Church of St. Francis Xavier
You can find this beautiful Jesuit Church of St. Francis Xavier on the Confluence Park (Rotuses Aikste) square in the old town of Kaunas. The church was build around 1700. It was renovated in 1992. I loved the pink and white facade.
Kaunas Town Hall
Not every city has a town hall as beautiful as the one from Kaunas. It’s definitely one of the top sights in Kaunas. You can find it at the same square as the church. The tower is the highest in the old town of Kaunas. It’s nicknamed The Swan because of it’s white/ivory color.
Kaunas Castle
At the most Western point in Kaunas you can find the medieval Kaunas Castle. What you can see and visit now is 1/3 of the original castle that was built in the 14th century. The castle is free to visit.
Viewpoint
If you cross the Neman River to the south side, you’ve got some great views over the city. I took this picture from the Aleksotas Observation Deck. On the left you’ll see the Old Town in the West and the further right you look, the newer the city gets.
Electric Scooters
A great way to see all the top sights of Kaunas in a few hours, is by electrical scooter. You can find them all over the city. We downloaded the Bolt app, and you can just pick up a green scooter if you see one. You can use it for as long (or short) as you want and just leave it somewhere within the designated area when you’re done!
Street Art
You can find a lot of graffiti and other street-art in Kaunas. This pink elephant is one of the most well-known pieces of graffiti in Kaunas, but there are many more to discover. Like a teenage girl on a bird house or an old man smoking a pipe.
Pazaislis Monastery
The Pazaislis Monastery is located just outside of Kaunas, but worth the detour. This beautiful and perfectly symmetrical monastery is still in use. Or at least, half of it is. And in the other half you’ll find the exclusive Monte Pacis hotel and restaurant.
