Want to have a real special experience? Book a night at the oldest hotel in the Netherlands! In a place called Bergen op Zoom in the West of the province Brabant, near Zeeland you’ll find Hotel de Draak. Hotel de Draak (the Dragon) is located right in the city center and has been around for over 600 years. It’s quite unique to walk around in this medieval building, with many elements of that time still there. Although the building might be ancient, it doesn’t mean that you’ll have to lack comfort during your stay. Hotel de Draak has 4 stars and rightfully so. There’s free wifi, comfortable beds and spacious rooms.
There’s also a wellness area where you can use the sauna, or get a massage or facial treatment. Housed in Hotel de Draak is Restaurant Hemingway, a Bib Gourmand noted restaurant. Read more about Restaurant Hemingway.
The main building of Hotel de Draak consists of 3 buildings, and they have 2 more buildings just around the corner (one for the wellness and one with a parking lot). Each of the three buildings has rooms in a different style; one is in empire style, one in British style and one in a modern style. Whichever style you spend the night in; you’ll feel the atmosphere of this very old building everywhere!
The current owners, the Hazen family, bought the hotel from its previous owners in 1984. In the last 30 years they expanded the hotel from 12 to 62 rooms. They kept all the historical aspects at Hotel de Draak, but also provide with your with modern day comfort.
As a Travel Foodie, breakfast is always very important when I spend the night at a hotel. Trust me; you’ll love the breakfast at Hotel de Draak! I was one of the first guests to experience breakfast at a new location. They used to serve it elsewhere, but are now serving it on the ground floor with views over the market square. This part of the hotel is even older than 600 years so it sure is a beautiful surrounding to wake up in!
They served many delicious items at the breakfast buffet of Hotel de Draak. From fruit to artisan bread, from scrambled eggs to pancakes. They have a yogurt machine for your granola bowl, waffles and paper cups for your coffee to-go. They had several sweets like muffins and cake. They even had a bottle of Prosecco ready in case you wanted to have breakfast in style!
We had a lovely stay at Hotel de Draak and I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a place to stay in Bergen op Zoom or if you’re looking for an unique hotel in general! You can book your room on this page or scroll down for more pictures.
