Right in the city center of Amsterdam, surrounded by tourist traps, there’s one gem that is really worth visiting: Madam Pancake. This pancake restaurant serves every combination of pancake toppings you can dream of, whether it’s sweet or savory. I have very few restaurant recommendations in the Red Light District of Amsterdam as most of them are very touristic and/or meat focussed. But Madam Pancake is definitely worth a visit and a good place for breakfast or lunch in the city center of Amsterdam.
Madam Pancake is within walking distance of the central station and located in the hearth of the Red Light District. It’s also located around the corner of one of Amsterdam’s best kept secrets: a large church in the attic of 3 houses called Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder. You can combine your visit to the church with a nice breakfast or lunch at Madam Pancake.
The pancakes at Madam Pancake are made fresh after you’ve ordered them and you’ll get a stack of 3 fluffy American pancakes. There are all kinds of combinations on the menu. They have breakfast specials, bowls, sweet pancakes and savory pancakes.
The pancakes that I’m holding were the sweet ‘Red Crush’ pancakes with dragon fruit, raspberry, strawberry and almond shavings. They also have sweet pancakes with dates and chocolate flakes and with mango or blueberry.
Savory pancakes include ‘The Hangover’ or The Veggie with avocado, feta cheese and date. They even have a hummus pancake stack!
The breakfast specials include this peanut butter, banana and chocolate flake combination. But they also have several egg specialties on pancakes and an overnight oats pancake stack.
In case you don’t really like pancakes (I can’t imagine people like that exist, but who knows), they also have several bowls like an acai bowl or dragon fruit bowl.
You can order your pancakes whole wheat, gluten free, oats or matcha for a 1,- surcharge.
Besides pancakes they also have several other sweets for your cravings. What they have changes regularly but you can think of cheesecakes, red velvet cake, brownies and pound cakes.
The owner and the chef of Madam Pancakes are also the men behind Pita Queen in Market 33 in Amsterdam Zuid.
