5 Mocktails that will get you through Dry January

Dry January is (almost) here and you decided to take it down a notch for this month! Or maybe you are even planning to have a whole dry year. Maybe you’re pregnant or maybe you just don’t want to have alcohol in your system for whatever reason. No, you’re not being weird or exhibiting abnormal behavior. It’s common to cut the intake of alcohol for a while. Now, what if you’re craving the delicious flavors of your favorite boozy cocktail? I’ve listed 5 mocktails that will help you get through Dry January or any dry period in your life.

Mocktails

Mocktails are perfect replacement for enjoying your favorite cocktails without the consumption of alcohol. Making mocktails can be easy. Just annex the alcoholic and you’re good to go. But what if the alcohol is the big flavor decider in your cocktails. Can you replace that? Well, you can leave the alcohol out or you can substitute it with it with a nonalcoholic flavor enhancer like a syrups, juices, aromas or natural extracts.
You can also create your mocktails from scratch without thinking of them as replacements of your boozy favorites. However you decide to approach them, mocktails are worth a try.

Mocktail #1: Virgin Piña Colada

The Piña Colada is one of the most famous cocktails of all times. And there’s a reason for that. The combination of pineapple & coconut is just magical. For a Virgin Piña Colada mocktail, just leave out the rum and it is still a delicious drink. This recipe makes 2 virgin Piña Coladas.

  • 100ml Pineapple Juice
  • 100ml Coconut milk or coconut cream for a richer, creamier drink
  • 150 grams of pineapple chunks (canned or fresh)
  • 20ml of Sugar syrup

Blend all ingredients with ice and pour in a glass*. Garnish your Piña Colada mocktail with a slice of pineapple.
*Still can’t forget about the rum? Add a dash of nonalcoholic rum aroma and blend all together.

Mocktail #2: Virgin Pornstar Martini

The Pornstar martini is a cocktail everyone should try at least once in their lives. Passion fruit and vanilla? Yes, please! Created by English bartender Douglas Ankrah, the Pornstar martini is here to say. Can you make this heavenly cocktail without alcohol? Yes, you can. This mocktail is one everyone will go crazy for.

  • 1 passion fruit
  • 50ml Pineapple juice
  • 50ml Apple juice
  • 15ml Lime juice
  • 10ml Vanilla syrup

Scoop out the passion fruit in a cocktail shaker. Add the remaining ingredients and shake with ice. Fine strain in a pre-chilled martini glass or champagne coupe. Garnish your mocktail with a half passion fruit. Still craving the sidekick of bubbles. Serve a small shot glass with fizzy nonalcoholic wine on the side.

Mocktail #3: Virgin Mojito

The Mojito is the world’s best-known cocktail. This cocktail is consumed and ordered in every corner of the world. When most people think of cocktails, Mojito is probably always the one that comes to mind. Lime, mint, sugar, rum, ice & soda.   That is all you need to make a delicious Mojito. Is the Mojito mocktail any good? Try it yourself.

  • 4 lime wedges or 25ml lime juice
  • 15ml sugar syrup or 2 bar spoons sugar
  • 8-12 mint leaves
  • 100ml Sprite*

Muddle the lime & sugar in a long drink glass. Clap the mint and add them in the glass. Add the remaining ingredients and churn vigorously. Garnish your Mojito mocktail with a mint sprig & a lime wedge.

*You can play with many flavors for the Mojito mocktail. Change up the sprite for ginger ale or even ginger beer for a spicier drink. Want a fruity variation? Muddle some fruit together with the lime & sugar. M

Mocktail #4: No Sex on the Beach

The Sex on the Beach is often that one cocktail most people start with, when having their first real cocktail. Making the nonalcoholic version of the Sex on the Beach is simple. It’s easy to make, easy to drink with lots of fruits and candy-like flavors. This peach mocktail is just as delicious without alcohol as its boozy counterpart.

  • 40ml Peach puree or peach nectar
  • 100ml Orange juice
  • 80ml Cranberry juice
  • 10ml Grenadine syrup

Build the drink in a long drink glass over cubed ice. Garnish your mocktail with an orange wedge.

Tip: Switch up the grenadine for other fruit syrups for a nice twist or even top up with soda water for a carbonation in your drink. The possibilities are endless! Proost!

Mocktail #5: No Ginlet

The Gimlet is just one of the clean & simple, but delicious classic cocktails. Described in the famous novel The Long Goodbye, by Raymond Chandler, this cocktail is one everybody must have tried once. The cocktail version of the Gimlet is also simple, yet amazing.

Shake all ingredients with ice. Fine-strain in a pre-chilled coupe glass. Garnish your Gin mocktail with a mint sprig.
