‘People who love to eat are always the best people’ according to Julia Child.
People who love to eat and travel are even better in my opinion! It sure is true for the lovely couple Jerry and Gordana who run Verde Basilico. They can provide catering for your party, host living room dinners and make pick-up meals so you can enjoy their cooking at home.
Jerry and Gordana make Italian food based on ‘cucina povera’ (poor people’s food), meaning the traditional Italian cuisine of people who cooked with whatever they had available. Meaning local, seasonal products that were aplenty.
Jerry and Gordana invited me and my friend Lotta from Healthy Life Lab over for a lovely Italian lunch in their living room in the Hague. They showed us that they really cater to your wishes as they didn’t only make the menu vegetarian for me, but even vegan for Lotta. We started with homemade black olive tapenade and sundried tomato and caper tapenade with toast. Jerry has shared his recipe for the black olive pate on their website, so you can also give it a try yourself!
As a main dish we had vegan spaghetti with their homemade pesto. They left out the parmesan cheese for us and made the traditional pesto with a twist: they used pecan nuts instead of pine nuts. Giving the pesto a very rich taste. It proved that you don’t need to drown your pasta in sauce in order for it to be tasty.
As a side dish they made a nice tomato salad.
For dessert they made ‘torta di pane’, a bread and cacao cake. Even this mouth watering dessert was vegan!
If you’re ever looking for a nice living room restaurant or a nice meal to pick-up and enjoy at home, I really recommend Verde Basilico. They also do catering in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France and Germany.
