Travel blog: Vlissingen, Zeeland

On this page I’m sharing my travel blog on Vlissingen, Zeeland. Zeeland is a province in the Netherlands that you can find in the South-West of the country, at the sea. You can discus if you can call it a travel blog as I live in the Netherlands, so for me a trip to Vlissingen is more like a staycation. But you can also see it like I traveled in my own country. And for people coming from Germany, Belgium, France or other countries; you might want a travel blog on Vlissingen in Zeeland. On this page I’m sharing what to see, where to eat and where to sleep in Vlissingen.

Art Nouveau villas

In the middle of Vlissingen there are 4 beautiful Art Nouveau villas. The Villas were build for the Belgian captains of the pilot boats that led the ships into the harbour. They’ve all got names of them; those are the names of the daughters of the captains. They’re build in 1905 and they still look like they did over 100 years ago.

Sint James the Great Church

In the middle of the city you can find the Sint James the Great church (Sint Jacobskerk). It’s a large protestant church that was build in the 14th century. It’s a great recognition point and as always you can find some nice bars and restaurants surrounding it.

Oude Markt

The church is located on the old market square. Attached to the church are three old, little houses. In two of them you can find Tilly Rose, a tea room that has delicious cakes.

Sint Jacobsstraat

If you ask me, the Sint Jacobsstraat is the nicest street of Vlissingen. You can find all kinds of independent shops in the Sint Jacobsstraat, which I like more than the bigger stores. I scored some great new outfits at Mrs Marcos, and I loved Skids for alternative kids clothes.

Harbour Vlissingen

The harbour in the city center of Vlissingen is called the Michiel de Ruyter harbour, after the famous sailer that was born in Zeeland. I love the facades of the classic houses behind the masts of the ships.

Boulevard Evertsen

If you walk up the boulevard to the North you’ll get to the Boulevard Evertsen where you can find some beautiful villas. They all have a different color and style. A fascinating street for architecture lovers.

Street-art

In that same area you’ll find a big deserted building with some nice street-art on it. You can find all kinds of works of graffiti. Some more professional than others. But in any case I always like to check out street-art spots.

Nollestrand

All the way up to the North of Vlissingen you can find the Nollestrand beach. Here you can find these cute, colorful beach houses. It’s also a great area if you want to go for a walk on the beach.

La Bella Cucina

Gotten hungry from all the top sights in Vlissingen? I’ve got you covered with some great food spots! I’m a ‘travel foodie’ for a reason, I always include food spots to my travel blogs!
One of my food recommendations in Vlissingen is Italian deli La Bella Cucina. They’ve got a display full of Italian inspired delicacies. Great to create an Italian food party at home. They’ve also got a cafe in the back where you can enjoy an Italian high tea.

Restaurant Sintjacobscafe

When I asked my Instagram followers for tips in Vlissingen, many recommended restaurant Sintjacobscafe to me. And I understand why; it’s a cosy cafe and the food is delicious. They’re mostly known for their big boards with several smaller dishes that you can share with two or more people. But they also have lovely dishes for if you have a different taste than your table companion. I went for this sandwich with pesto, cheese and avocado.

Restaurant De Gecroonde Liefde

I spend the evening with my boyfriend in Vlissingen and when I was looking for a nice restaurant I found De Gecroonde Liefde. I have to admit that I mostly choose it because of its name; The Crowned Love. But I was very happy we went there because it’s a great restaurant. It’s small, so reserve in advance if you can. But the service is super and the dishes are all delicious. Pictured you see their brownie dessert.

Restaurant Boulevard 17

Restaurant Boulevard17 is located right at the Boulevard of Vlissingen. It’s a great stop for during or after your walk on the beach. They’re open for lunch, nibbles and dinner. I had a lovely dinner here. When I told the waitress that I eat vegetarian they made this tasty vegan gyros wrap for me.

Hotel Restaurant Gevangentoren

The most unique hotel in Vlissingen, and probably in Zeeland, is the Gevangentoren. This former prison’s tower houses a restaurant on the ground and first floor, and a hotel on the second and third floor. They only have one suite, so if you book it you’ll get the whole upper part of the tower for yourself. It has a living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor of the suite and the bedroom and bathroom in the top of the tower. From the bed you’ve got a view over the sea. As there’s only one room and it’s a very special hotel, you’ve got to reserve your room well in advance.

Hotel Boulevard 17

Another beautiful hotel in Vlissingen is Boulevard17. They’ve got just a few suites but they’re all brand new and most of them have got ocean views. The rooms are beautiful designed and are perfect to relax. They’ve got a comfortable bed, a nice bath tub, calm colors and coffee and tea facilities in the room.
You can book a great vegan arrangement at Boulevard 17.
