Vegan Utrecht

On this page I’m sharing my favorite vegan food spots in Utrecht. All restaurants on this page are either 100% vegan, 100% vegetarian or have good vegan options. So if you’re looking for a good spot for vegan breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner in Utrecht, this is a perfect list for you.

Copper Branch

Copper Branch is a well known vegan restaurant chain in Canada, and it has opened up their first branch in the Netherlands in Utrecht. Everything on the menu is completely vegan. From burgers, to bowls, to wraps. If you see the words ‘salmon’ or ‘blue cheese’ on the menu; don’t worry they’re vegan too! Pictured you see their portobello burger with vegan cheese. You can order side dishes with your burger, or save some room for dessert as they have several vegan cakes and ice cream.

Van Planten

Restaurant Van Planten is a 100% vegan restaurant in Utrecht. They serve lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday. The menu of Van Planten changes every month, you can check out their website to see this months menu. In the past they had dishes like scrambled tofu for lunch and vegan tacos for dinner.

Life’s a Peach

Life’s a Peach is a real hidden gem in Utrecht. This lovely eatery serving focaccia and pastries is 100% vegan and run by the Italian/Scottish Vanessa. She makes delicious vegan focaccia breads from scratch. She tops the focaccias with as many local and seasonal products as possible and tries to have a zero-waste policy. Besides food you can also buy some nice art and design items at Life’s a Peach.

Gys

Gys is one of my favorite restaurants in Utrecht. Gys Utrecht is an organic, vegetarian restaurant with many vegan and gluten free options. Besides one dish with egg and their option for cow’s milk, everything on their menu is vegan. They’re open for lunch and dinner and they also serve good snacks and sweets. The restaurant at the Voorstraat is very popular, the other branch at the Amsterdamsestraatweg often has more seats available. You can also book a vegan high-tea here.

The 5th Utrecht

Restaurant The 5th Utrecht is very centrally located on the Neude square, right in the middle of the city center opposite the central library and just a stone’s throw away from the central train station. They’re open for lunch and dinner and all the dishes are vegetarian and many of them are vegan. Vegan options are clearly marked on the menu. Their vegan Banh Mi sandwich is my recommendation for lunch and this vegan shawarma wrap with fries is one of my favorites for dinner.

Root’s Rock Kitchen

Root’s Rock Kitchen can be found in Utrecht West, between Lombok and Zuilen. They’re open from Thursday to Sunday for snacks and dinner. All the food on the menu of Root’s Rock Kitchen is vegan. From vegan gyros to several different vegan burgers. They also have good vegan cakes.

Last Vegas

Last Vegas is a vegan snackbar in Utrecht. Here you can go for a (late-night) vegan snack. From vegan loaded fries to vegan burgers, every fast-food item on the menu of Last Vegas is plant-based. If you’re looking for cheap vegan food in Utrecht, Last Vegas is the place to be! I found all items on their menu very reasonably priced.

Broei

Broei is a vegetarian restaurant with a great interior open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Besides a restaurant, they’re also a creative (work) space. I recommend going to Broei for lunch and have a sandwich because they have their own mini bakery in which they bake sourdough bread. They also have several great vegan options like the sandwich with hummus, za’atar and vegetables pictured above.

SUGO Pizza

At SUGO they have built the menu in a different way than traditional restaurants. They state it when a dish contains animal ingredients, instead of indicating when a dish is plant-based. So all the dishes are plant-based, unless it shows a logo for for example meat or dairy. At SUGO you eat Roman pizza made with special flour, it has a thinner crust and less carbs and gluten than regular pizza’s. The vegan pizza with mushrooms, truffle and vegan Parmesan cheese is one of my favorites. And for dessert the vegan Salted Caramel Mousse is a must-try.

Vegitalian

You might already guess what Vegitalian serves if you look at their name: vegan and vegetarian Italian food. On the menu you can find all kinds of pasta’s and pizza’s, they’re all vegetarian and quite a few dishes are vegan. You might not expect this from an Italian restaurant, but they also serve breakfast and lunch. So you can also go for a smoothie bowl or vegan sandwich at Vegitalian. And they also deliver in Utrecht!

Juul’s Hummus

If you love Middle-Eastern food, Juul’s Hummus is the place to be in Utrecht! After their stay and many trips to Israel, owners Julia and Remco decided to open up a hummus restaurant in Utrecht. They’ve got two restaurants at the moment that are open from Tuesday to Sunday for dinner. They’ve got several good vegan (hummus) dishes on the menu that are clearly marked.

Rose & Vanilla

Do you want to satisfy your sweet tooth? Rose and Vanilla has delicious vegan cakes, brownies and other sweets. From carrot cake to coffee brownies, everything is vegan. This makes Rose & Vanilla also a great spot for those who are lactose intolerant. They’re open 7 days a week from 9 to 5. You can also pick up vegan cakes to-go at Rose and Vanilla in Utrecht.

Loua Juicebar

Right in the city center of Utrecht you can find Loua Juice bar (where Smood smoothie bar used to be). On the ground floor you can find the juice bar where they sell all kinds of juices and smoothies, mostly to-go. In the basement they have a restaruant that serves an all-day breakfast and lunch menu with smoothie bowls. The acai-bowl is my favorite. They also sell refined sugar-free cakes and several vegetarian/vegan sandwiches in the restaurant.

Bammetje Bakery

Bammetje Bakery is a vegan-friendly bakery in Utrecht. They specialised in vegan pastries and hand-made sourdough bread. They’ve got delicious vegan croissants, vegan tartelettes and vegan pies. And if you’re lucky they’re selling their famous ‘Crompouce’, a hybrid of a croissant and a tompouce. Brammetje Bakery is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Sunshine

Sunshine is an Ethiopian restaurant. I always think it’s a great experience to eat Ethiopian. You get all kinds of spreads and Ethiopian pancakes (injera). You eat the spreads with the pancakes, and at an Ethiopian restaurant you eat with your hands! The vegetarian spreads are listed on a separate list on the menu (please note that they consider fish vegetarian too). If you tell them that you want to eat vegan, they’ll give you a vegan dinner.

Le Jardin

Restaurant Le Jardin is located at a beautiful square in the city center of Utrecht. The restaurant isn’t a 100% vegan or vegetarian but they do have their main focus on seasonal vegetables. You can tell the waiter if you want to eat vegan and they’ll prepare a delicious vegan lunch or dinner for you. As vegetables are the main ingredient of the dishes anyway, you’ll eat just as good as meat or fish eaters. Le Jardin is a perfect spot if you want to have a fancy vegan dinner of if you have something to celebrate.
